Improvement of the quality of school life and learning processes through the adoption of new spatial configurations for standard school environments

These needs are based on the principle of autonomy of movement for children that only a flexible and multifunctional space can allow.

The widespread use of technology allows and requires a different organization of the learning space. Hence the need for integrated design between environments that we could define, borrowing an expression from the world of online environments, as "interoperable".

Specifically, the classrooms are designed to accommodate multidisciplinary, dynamic teaching where the furnishing layout is not fixed by schemes.

By diversifying teaching activities and the environments in which they take place, a new respect and particular attention for the interests and motivations of students is manifested:

a school in which the principle of the singularity and particularity of each person comes first, enhancing each person's learning style and stimulating the most diverse ways to make the cultural heritage that the school still has the task of delivering one's own.

It is the design group's belief that the success of a project is measured on its ability to be defined as "singular and appropriate", i.e. the result of a correct physical-spatial interpretation of the function to which the work is dedicated, placed in relation close with the elements of the context which therefore determine its absolute singularity.

Construction of the New Nursery School in V. Barbacci (Bologna)

The project involves a single independent building immersed in the relevant greenery, arranged on a single floor above ground in order to allow a direct connection to the external area without any architectural barrier, thus facilitating access not only to people with motor disabilities but also the passing of strollers.

Part of the over 1,000 square meters of internal surface area will be dedicated to children's activities and another will be used for general services.

In line with the functional program and the needs of the educational offer, 4 classrooms are planned which follow one another along the southern front and which enjoy direct access to the external spaces through an overhanging element which not only reduces the radiation of the classrooms but it also guarantees a covered route.

Centofiori Nursery School - Rivarolo (Genoa)

The school is divided into three macro areas: one dedicated to staff and services, one to teaching, and the third to the external space of the terraces.

The area of the educational sections occupies the portion of the building with the best solar radiation and climatic exposure with dedicated access to the external spaces. The three sections are each divided into spaces dedicated to sleep, teaching, and play.

Between the three sections there is also a multipurpose space that can be fully integrated into the different sections.

The teaching area is designed to be seamlessly connected if necessary, creating a single large learning space.

The project of the external areas envisages giving an important role to the green element and to the micro-topography of the furnishings, as an element recalling one of the salient characteristics of the Genoese landscape. The external spaces will not undergo dimensional changes, but their spatial reorganization is proposed through the design of play areas and specialized greenery with the aim of guaranteeing the physical, visual, and perceptive stimulation of the child.

Fata Morgana Nursery School & Daycare - (Genoa)

The project reorganizes the internal functions of the existing nursery school, improving the quality of the spaces and creating a safe and welcoming place, which stimulates the children's creativity and is adapted to new teaching methodologies.

The nursery welcomes children aged between 3 months and 3 years and must guarantee diversified needs for all age groups. The spaces are designed to stimulate children's creativity and sociability.

The classroom no longer exists only as a classroom in its traditional sense, but rather as a single integrated space that evolves according to needs.  Common spaces become places for group work and must promote a positive climate, adapt to various needs, with flexible furnishings capable of generating different configurations.

The presence of large terraces allows you to enjoy this considerable outdoor space as a real open-air classroom/laboratory, equipped with a hanging vegetable garden. It is planned to create a brise solei structure which will have shading and cooling function on the hottest days.

New Nursery School - Paullo (Milan)

The designed nursery school is set on a large central axis which loses its role of mere distribution, increasing its width, becoming a containment, interactive, playful space and where the curiosity of the little ones is stimulated and finds confirmation in the various equipment available; on this axis three large bodies develop in which the common element is the basic cell of the teaching section.

The teaching cells look outwards and, thanks to the large windows, establish a direct relationship with nature, thus expanding the scope of educational and leisure activities.

The porticoes and the garden thus become school extension environments that can be used both in the recess and recess phases and for educational, experimental, cognitive, experiential and interactive activities, even with larger groups of students than individual classes.

I Passi Nursery School (Pisa)

The new building has a rectangular plan with linear development (north – south longitudinal axis). The entrance space is characterized by the presence of a large covered loggia with space dedicated to the storage of strollers.

This is a "building replacement" intervention which consists of demolition and reconstruction with the same functional destination. The new building will accommodate 60 children divided into three functional units.

The central space of the nursery school is made up of the agora, a common space overlooked by the functional units associated with the various sections and which acts as the main distribution element. All general services are located in a single block on the north side and accessible from the agora.

Demolition and Reconstruction of the Nursery School - San Biagio (Pisa)

Building a space for children means working in a context where the perception of the surrounding world, whether natural or built, is above all sensorial.

We thought of the new San Biagio Nursery School as a space of light where the inside and the outside interpenetrate, a welcoming space where you can experiment with the new.

The building, located in a green public pedestrian area common to the neighborhood, will however have a large external courtyard (approximately 1,200 sqm) fenced for the exclusive use of the nursery school, in addition to the large internal courtyard.

Designing for children from 0 to 3 years old means matching the views, doors, construction elements, furnishings, equipment and games with accident prevention features.

The building has an overall average height of 3.33 meters capable of guaranteeing good ventilation and a large volume, however, the radiant heated floors, the alignments of the horizontal structure at 2.40 meters, and the shed conformation of the cover will guarantee child-friendly visual, acoustic, and lighting comfort.

Toniolo Nursery School - (Pisa)

The new building is configured as a compact volume of approximately 22m x 26m and features a large skylight, oriented north/northeast, useful for natural lighting and natural ventilation of the space.

The main internal nuclei around which are the three classrooms and the block that houses it.

The external walls, made with xlam technology, have large glass surfaces and French windows which allow a continuous view of the external green space as well as direct contact with the garden from the classrooms with common activities, especially during the summer.

Green Nursery School – Tolentino (Macerata)

The project area is made up only in part of the “N. Green” lot in which the reconstruction was done then it was necessary to also occupy the plot of land adjacent to it, both owned by the Municipality.

The drafting of the final project takes its basis from the request of the municipal administration to create an innovative nursery school that constitutes an important resource for its territory, as well as from the indications contained within the feasibility study together with the pedagogical project developed at the same time as this preliminary design phase.

The capacity of the new nursery school, in accordance with the forecasts of the Municipal Administration, will be increased from the current 45 places to 60.

The new organism, positioned in the center of this area, will therefore present a completely renewed volumetric layout creating spatial relationships with the surrounding urban fabric, with the green area located to the west, and with the other schools present in the immediate vicinity.
