Building opens to the park and very permeable
A structure that "is born from the territory" and that wants to coexist without attacking it, seeking a quiet coexistence. The new Livorno Hospital was born from this concept. A modern structure, which however seeks to limit the environmental impact on the territory, through the creation of volumes with a sinuous geometric composition. The project includes a regular-shaped service area with two low volumes for hospital stays, on 3 floors, so as not to "disturb" the view towards the adjacent Pertini Park. The new volume of the Livorno hospital "sits" on the territory and lets this penetrate into it through large cloisters (internal gardens), inserting itself between the various volumes that compose it. The same compositional geometry that is reflected in the arrangements of the large green areas outside the public park.
The project's priority is to mend a part of the city occupied by the now partially demolished Pirelli workshops, a residential neighborhood with an existing hospital. For this reason it becomes essential, with the new hospital structure, to create an element of connection between the Pertini Park, the city, and the new urban park all to be built in the area of the existing hospital.
The hospital appears as a building open to the park and very permeable, thanks to the opening of large cloisters on all levels. In the plan of the Services Plate the internal flows are placed towards the park with the intention of bringing nature to life also from inside the new hospital building. The large cloisters on the first floors are a true extension of the park within the hospital structure.
The theme of the Hospital in the Park is strengthened not only by the recovery of the historic grounds of Pertini and the expansion of the current hospital area in the area, but also by the administration's choice to extend the park up to the Cisternone, also incorporating the area former industrial building bordering it.
