The new hospital: a large urban park

A system integrated into the context, an integral part of the environment and landscape.

 Project idea

The project concept of the New Pesaro Hospital was developed on the basis of these principal themes:

- Maximum integration in the environmental and landscape context through the creation of a hospital shaped on the orography of the place, a 'non-architecture', a system interconnected with the landscape in terms of internal/external relationship, permeability, coherence, perceptive and material continuity;

 - Reduction of the impact of buildings on the environmental and urban context, through:

  • the containment of height development, which does not exceed that of the current Solazzi Square;

  • the definition of a shape that is set on the site of existing buildings;

  • a degrading volumetric development, which interprets and follows the trend of the surrounding hills, establishing a relationship of dialogue, mimesis and symbiosis;

 - Creation of a green hospital, on the ground and at altitude, with the aim of maximizing the benefits deriving from the symbiotic relationship with nature on the individual/patient (healing design) and on the environment (microclimate, ecology, and eco-compatibility): in a process of valorization of the landscape system, the 'preserved' green areas in the open ground become thematic gardens for patients and citizens, the areas occupied on the ground by buildings are returned to heights in the form of usable green roofs;

- Ergonomics and rationality of the distribution organization, aimed at maximum clinical and management efficiency in terms of proximity, fluidity and effectiveness of the connections between 4 macro functional blocks: 12-hour hospital, 24-hour hospital, maternal and child care, general, logistical and administrative services.

- Efficiency of the organization of services, centered on the creation of a linear logistical and technological spine, parallel to the orographic trend and following the development of the building.

 Urban inclusion

The project idea fits within the strategies outlined by the DIP for the urban and landscape regeneration of the sector. Given the strategic position of the intervention area, the project represents an opportunity to redevelop and enrich the urban space, in a dialogue between scales and natural elements.

The generating principle of the intervention is centered on three elements.

  1. The urban park and rain gardens. Following the demolition of the existing buildings and eliminating the waterproofing in the connected areas, the project involves the creation of 4 deep green areas, with the value of supporting the maintenance and improvement of the ecosystem services of the territory, both in terms of regulation (air quality , climate, water resources, water purification, pollination, mitigation of events, and rainfall), and of a cultural nature (education, aesthetics, sociality, recreation, and health): these green spaces could become educational areas, therapeutic gardens and places of experimentation on native vegetation, in synergy with the nearby Marche Floristic Research Center and with the nearby San Bartolo Natural Park Authority.

  1. Four healthcare functions and urban spaces. With the aim of maximizing the effectiveness of the activity flow and enhancing the quality of the experience offered to the citizen and the patient, the distribution structure is developed starting from the identification of four macro areas, whose mutual articulation of adjacency, proximity and interdependence derives from the experience gained in the sector and from the integration of Lean Design tools, for the optimization of relationships between people, strategies and processes.

  2. Landscape peninsulas and green roofs to protect the functions. Just as the building conforms to the surrounding context and orography, the greenery is also designed on the lower grounds and at higher altitudes to harmonize with the surrounding landscape and maximize opportunities for use.
